Appointment: Clinton Selection Criticized

What would motivate President Clinton’s transportation secretary to appoint a professional lobbyist, outspoken on key issues, to assist the Federal Highway Administrator? What kind of politics is behind the recent appointment of Evelyn Fierro, a longtime vocal opponent to the 710 Freeway extension, to a key position within the agency that will decide on the fate of the project?

My immediate reaction was disgust when I first read of the appointment in the Times San Gabriel Valley Section on Sunday, Dec. 26; but disgust turned to disbelief after thinking it over for a few hours. One would question the political wisdom of such an obvious blunder.

Congress must urge the President to seek a reversal of the appointment or face redress by the constituency.
