DOODLE TOO: As if those beleaguered board members at Carl Karcher Enterprises haven’t had enough problems the past year, now someone’s going after their Crazy Doodler Top. . . . The spinning toy comes with a kid’s $1.99 happy meal at Carl’s Jr. restaurants. But DoodleTop Co. of Carmel has filed a federal lawsuit, saying it has the trademark on a similar spinner. For now, Carl Karcher Enterprises is declining comment.

FALSE START: How important is it to kick off a political campaign on the right foot? Huntington Beach activist Haydee Tillotson officially announced on Wednesday she’ll run for the seat Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder is leaving (B7). But Tillotson’s campaign people faxed the news media the wrong address, sending them scurrying across Huntington Beach to find her. . . . No serious damage, though: Tillotson is Wieder’s own choice to succeed her.

LEAP OF FAITH: At his peak, track champion Dwight Stones could clear 7 feet routinely in the high jump. Now he wants to become the first 40-year-old to do it. . . . To get there, he’s been working out since September at UC Irvine, not far from his home. Sunday, the 10-time national champion and former Olympic star launches his comeback at the Montreal Grand Prix Indoor Games. . . . Says Stones: “I am doing this to maximize my ability and pursue excellence. You can be the best you can be, no matter how old you are.”

NO FISHING: It’s not just the farmers who’d like more rain. So would some fishermen. If you were planning to attend Friday’s grand opening of Santa Ana River Lakes, just off the Riverside Freeway in Anaheim, you’ll have to wait. The opening date was set when officials figured the normal rainfall would fill it. But there has been little rain, and the three lakes there are only one-quarter full. . . . The Orange County Water District is pumping in water, but it will take several weeks to fill. A February opening for fishermen is more likely.
