ROLE MODELS? A year after Ventura High School’s football coach pleaded guilty to having sex with a student, the school is trying to fire its swim coach for similar conduct, according to a state document (B1). . . . An attorney for Dale Hahn, 44, said he did nothing wrong. . . . Hahn isn’t the only role model on the defensive: Father David Piroli, on trial for allegedly stealing church money, says another priest is the real culprit. Now church officials have lashed back (B1), calling Piroli’s assertion “outrageous.”

COURT HANG-UPS: Like the attorneys in Erik Menendez’s trial (A1), Don Glynn knows what it’s like to have a long trial end in a hung jury. “It’s frustrating, especially if it hangs close,” said Glynn, the Ventura County deputy D.A. who prosecuted Diane Mannes in a 1989 drunk-driving murder trial. That jury deadlocked 7 to 5 for conviction, making it one of the highest-profile local cases to end in a hung jury. . . . Bright spot: “Frequently you learn more about the defense case than you knew before so you can better retry it,” Glynn said. . . . Mannes pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

BUSY SENIOR: Robert S. Lipman is a regular at the Simi Valley Senior Center, but don’t look for him at the card tables--he’s too busy. . . . “He’s a very, very active volunteer,” said Kathryn Oliver, senior services coordinator. Which is why the city’s seniors named him Volunteer of the Year. . . . Lipman, 80, heads the city’s Council on Aging and delivers Meals on Wheels. “He’s willing to do the grunt work.”

MOVIE MECCA: Camarillo has a mere three movie screens. But it could soon become the cinema center of Ventura County with 38 (B1), more than twice as many as Ventura, the current leader with 17 screens. . . . The Mann, United Artists and Edwards chains have all received city approval for multi-screen complexes. City officials doubt all three will be developed, but Edwards plans a Thanksgiving opening for its 3,044-seat complex. . . . “Ours is definitely going to be built,” president Jim Edwards said. “Camarillo is a very good area for us.”
