The Gold Rush Is Out

Silver celebrates ’94 not just as the year’s hottest metal, but as its color too. Rag mags are already touting everything from chunky sterling rings to dainty silver slippers. Look for head-to-toe metal madness--except in one area: on the face. Frosty silver eye shadow has gone the way of ‘80s excess, and silver lipstick only washes out even the most rosy complexion, say makeup artists.

Cool as Chrome

What do Elvis, snowboarding and the front end of a 18-wheeler truck’s bumper have in common? They somehow all inspired sunglass maker Greg Arnet to coat his popular Raven frames in a chrome wash ($85). “The bubbling lens provide full coverage for plenty of protection from the elements,” says the San Clemente designer, who before starting his namesake company in ’92 designed for Oakley and developed race bikes for Suzuki. The arms of the nylon frames are injected with wire for better adjustment. “We only did a limited quantity of the chromes, and now everybody wants a pair. You know, it’s hard to keep things cool and not give it to everybody.”

Every Cloud Has One

Men enjoy silver-lined living this year with silver accouterments such as cuff links and details such as buttons. At David Rickey & Co. in Costa Mesa, the silver-button touch is catching on fast, says co-owner Rick Lamitie. In addition to recommending to their clients that they have silver crest buttons sewn on their dark blazers, customers are coming in requesting the change as an update to their suits. The influence, Lamitie says, comes across from the Southwestern trend, which relies heavily on the white metal.

Silver Wear

Juan Geyer tells tales about creatures with tails but by way of the spoken word. His animal stories are told for Anni + Co. via sterling silver belts, pins, bracelets earrings and watches ($50 to $415). The “mischievous pup belt,” says spokeswoman Billur Wallerich of Neiman Marcus in Fashion Island Newport Beach, “shows a cute, little guy getting into everything.” She adds: “The wonderful aspect about these accessories is that you can make up your own stories.”
