Three tourists were shot and wounded early Friday in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, the latest in a series of attacks on visitors during the past six months.

At least two victims in the 2 a.m. shooting outside a bar appeared to have been bystanders, San Francisco police Inspector James Spillane said.

Nobody has been arrested.

The trouble began when an argument erupted at closing time between two men walking their dogs and a group of about 20 patrons leaving the bar, Spillane said.

One of the dog walkers pulled out an automatic pistol and fired into the crowd, he said.

William Hunt, 25, of Richmond, Va., was shot five times. He was in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital on Friday, a nursing supervisor said.

Two men who were not with him and did not get involved in the argument were shot in the legs. Those two, William Wilson, 29, of San Diego and Miles Decotiis, 23, of Santa Cruz were treated and released from Mt. Zion Hospital.

The two men with the dogs fled.

The shooting follows four other attacks on tourists this summer.

Two French teachers were beaten and robbed in the Western Addition, two Japanese women were mugged at the cable car turnaround near Fisherman’s Wharf, an Irish student was shot during a robbery on the wharf and an elderly woman from Brooklyn, N.Y., was assaulted outside the St. Francis Hotel.
