Police were searching Friday for a would-be carjacker who shot an 18-year-old man in the hip while the teen-ager and a friend were stopped at a service station, authorities said.

The incident began shortly before 3 p.m. at Sam’s Mobil Station on the corner of Corbin Avenue and Sherman Way, when a man approached the driver of a 1964 Chevrolet Impala and demanded the car, said Sgt. Paul Sciarrillo of the LAPD’S West Valley Division.

“He gave the car up, but his buddy in the car didn’t want to give the car up and tried to grab the keys, at which time the suspect shot the buddy,” Sciarrillo said.

The gunman then tried to drive away, but the car stalled, Sciarrillo said, and the man fled on foot.

Police spent about 3 1/2 hours using two police dogs, a police helicopter and about 25 officers securing the one-block area around the station and searching for the robber, but were unable to apprehend him, Sciarrillo said.

Sciarrillo said the victim, whose name was not released, was undergoing surgery and was in critical but stable condition Friday night.
