CRENSHAW : Police Foot Patrols Begin on Crenshaw
The Police Department’s 77th Street Division has begun foot patrols along Crenshaw Boulevard between Vernon and Manchester avenues, City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter announced last week.
Two patrols of two officers each operate from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Funding for the new patrols is being provided through Project Safety L.A., a funding program approved by the City Council last month that uses police overtime pay for extra patrols.
“We want to shift to community-based policing in our district, and we’re starting with Crenshaw,” said Jeffrey Prangm, an aide to the 6th District councilwoman. “These patrols are part of a long-term plan to implement more community involvement with the police. The whole idea is for beat officers to get to know their neighborhoods. We want to nip any fears business owners or others might have in the bud.”
Jim Watt, who owns Cebu Restaurant on Vernon Avenue near Crenshaw, said that although increased patrols should improve the safety of those businesses in shopping centers, such as The Boys supermarket at Rodeo Road and Slauson Avenue, the same needs to be done along Crenshaw north to the Santa Monica Freeway.
“There’s more people parking along Crenshaw at that point, and more need for foot or bike patrols,” he said. “Hopefully, that’s next.”
