Scout Should Be Praised, Not Fined

* I read with astonishment about Richard Wright’s good deed in aiding the Coast Guard and sheriff’s rescue units in finding the pleasure craft in trouble, and the reaction of the Moulton Parkway Assn. No. 1 to his humanitarian act (“Scout Fined for Using CB in Boat Rescue,” Jan. 5).

Many issues that we face in life are clouded with uncertainties, making a correct choice difficult. This one was not.

Mr. Wright made the only choice possible--one that I hope my children and grandchildren would make if faced with such a situation.

Come now, is the precious association conformity to be given higher priority than the saving of human life?

I hope not.

* The world is askew when an Explorer Scout is fined for assisting in a rescue attempt using a CB radio!

Just because neighbors had television reception interrupted? This is pathetic. His condo association should be so lucky to have a resident hero living among them!

Before such a man is cast down, think on this: Those getting static over their cordless phones might just welcome Richard Wright’s timely heroics in a disaster yet to come.

* With Orange County citizens concerned about gang violence and guns, an Explorer Scout responds to a distress call from a stranded boat and is criticized for his actions!

It seems that Moulton Parkway residents were angry because the CB radio that he used to notify the Coast Guard interfered with their TV reception.

Let’s praise our thoughtful, caring young people, not fine them, for heaven’s sake!
