COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titan Women Beat Irvine for First Big West Victory

Cal State Fullerton got its first Big West women’s basketball victory Saturday, defeating UC Irvine, 75-72.

Autumn Hollyfield scored a game-high 24 points and added 11 rebounds for the host Titans. Shayla Bradshaw had 23 points and six assists and Shefonda Colbert had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Fullerton is 2-9, 1-4 in conference.

Michelle Kahler led Irvine with 16 points and Allah-mi Basheer added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Anteaters are 1-11, 0-4 in conference.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Concordia 88, Point Loma Nazarene 82--Gitte Mejer scored a career-high 47 points, making 17 of 19 field goals and all 13 of her free throws. The total also surpassed Mejer’s school record of 37 points against The Master’s last season.

Southern California College 83, Cal Baptist 41--Tina Demarsh scored 25 points to lead Southern California College.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 71, Chapman 58--Christine Rodness scored 20 points and Kellie Hoffman added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (6-7). Melody Earle scored 17 points and Melissa Starr added 13 points and 12 rebounds for Chapman (3-13).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Cal Baptist 89, Southern California College 77--Dan Hyde led Southern California Christian with 19 points, but all five starters scored in double figures for Cal Baptist.

In the Western Christian Athletic Conference:

American Indian 85, Pacific Christian 83--Leading, 78-73, with under five minutes to go, Pacific Christian failed to score on five possessions. American Indian took an 81-80 lead with two minutes remaining on Brady Rivers’ layup, and Mike Gonzalez, who finished with 21, sealed the victory with a three-pointer. Ruxton Shmietenknop scored 23 for Pacific Christian and Charles Ross added 24.

In nonconference men’s swimming:

Fresno State 120, UC Irvine 56--Rory Nomoto took first place in the 200 individual medley (1:58.53) in the Anteaters’ loss. Also winning were Irvine’s Elijah Fan in the 200 freestyle (1:46.00), Mark Swangel in the 50 freestyle (21.86) and the 200 medley relay team (1:38.00). The Anteaters are 2-8 in dual meets.

In nonconference women’s swimming:

Fresno State 140, UC Irvine 56--Gwen Yoshizumi, Danielle Bries, Janelle Wong and Esme Lombard led the 200-freestyle relay team in UC Irvine’s only first-place finish. The Anteaters are 4-8 in dual meets.
