SIMI VALLEY : Student Who Sold LSD Faces Expulsion

A Simi Valley junior high school student faces expulsion after being caught on campus selling LSD to 10 fellow students, police said.

Officials at Sequoia Junior High School learned of the drug sales when several students told them that rumors about them had been circulating on campus. After investigating, Simi Valley police said they would allow the school district to discipline the children involved.

The 10 students caught buying the powerful hallucinogen have already been suspended, and some were transferred to other schools, school board President Carla Kurachi said.

“We treat this kind of thing very seriously,” Kurachi said. “We don’t want kids selling and we don’t want them buying. It’s that simple.”

Sequoia Principal Jan Britz said she was disturbed by the incident but was relieved that when confronted about the drug activity, the students involved were truthful.

“They pretty much owned up to it,” Britz said. “We were very pleased with the way they handled it because the school has always tried to make sure that students come forward, even if they’ve made mistakes.”

As for the fate of the student caught selling the drugs, Kurachi said the school board faces a difficult decision.

“It’s a very serious matter to kick education away from a kid,” Kurachi said. “It may be best for the kid to keep him in school, but you have to weigh that against the message you are sending to the other kids. We can’t just look away.”
