CONEJO VALLEY : School Board Moves Lincoln Holiday

Share

So much for the sanctity of historical accuracy.

For the sake of scheduling convenience, classified employees--workers other than faculty and administration--in the Conejo Valley Unified School District this year will celebrate Lincoln’s birthday March 28 instead of Feb. 12.

School board members approved the holiday switch Thursday with a few light-hearted jabs at Assistant Supt. Leean Nemeroff, who pitched the change, saying it would benefit students.

“Lincoln must be turning over in his grave,” board member Mildred Lynch said.

Without the altered holiday, the last day of the school year would fall on a Monday, and few students would attend, Nemeroff said.

By moving the classified employees’ holiday to March 28, it falls during the week of spring break, when students are already off, and does not force an extra day’s break in instruction, Nemeroff said. Therefore, it does not lengthen the school year by one day, she said.

“It’s not going to help students remember when Lincoln was born,” board President Dolores Didio said.
