Earthquake Closes More Than the Freeways

Here is a partial list of cancellations and other changes in the arts and entertainment due to Monday’s earthquake. Because of continuing uncertainties, it is best to telephone venues for the latest information. A list of confirmed openings for today appears on F6.

STAGE

“Fool Moon” at the Ahmanson at the Doolittle in Hollywood will have regular subscriber’s performances beginning Friday. The official opening, which had been planned for Wednesday, has been shifted to Monday.

Due to structural damage at the American Renegade Theatre in North Hollywood, “Knockin’ ‘Em Dead,” scheduled to open Friday, and “The Pen” have been postponed until a new venue can be found.

“The Desired Effect,” scheduled to open Sunday at NoHo Studios in North Hollywood, has been postponed. The theater reportedly sustained severe damage.

“Which End’s Up?” will open Jan. 28, a week later than scheduled, at the Company of CharActors/Lionstar Theater in Studio City, following extensive clean-up.

“Miss Reardon Drinks a Little,” which was to have opened tonight, will now open Jan. 27 at the Attic Theatre in Hollywood so that company members can cope with quake damage to their homes.

MOVIES

Some theaters in Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley sustained damage but most were attempting to reopen quickly. The El Capitan Theater in Hollywood was closed due to a burst water pipe but expected to reopen by Friday.

MUSIC

The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra on Friday and the King’s Singers on Saturday have both been moved from UCLA’s Royce Hall, which is being studied for possible structural damage, to the Wadsworth Theatre, Westwood.

CHILDREN

Sunday’s Craig ‘n Co. benefit concert, originally scheduled to take place at John Burroughs High School, which was heavily damaged, will be presented at Burbank High School Auditorium on Sunday at 2 p.m.

DANCE

The UCLA M.A. Dance Concert scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been postponed until further notice.

ART

The following Barnsdall Art Park facilities will be closed for the rest of the week: Junior Arts Center, Municipal Art Gallery, Hollyhock House. The Barnsdall Art Center and Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Blvd., will maintain current schedules.

Numerous private galleries on the Westside suffered damage and some may be closed for repairs.

MUSEUMS

It will be at least four weeks until the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County’s Burbank satellite will re-open following damage to ceiling tiles and flooding in the main gallery from a sprinkler system that went off during the quake.
