Truck Fire Jams San Diego Freeway

Share

Fire on the back of a one-ton flatbed truck carrying empty propane tanks caused a large rush-hour traffic jam Thursday that radiated in three directions from the southbound San Diego Freeway at Seal Beach Boulevard, authorities said.

Vapors from the four-foot-wide, four-foot-long tanks caught fire about 4:30 p.m., according to the Orange County Fire Department. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which started in the truck cab.

No one was injured, but the fire briefly closed all lanes of the San Diego Freeway in each direction. At one point, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said, southbound traffic on the freeway was backed up to the Long Beach Airport.
