Kenneth Utt; Produced ‘Silence of the Lambs’

Kenneth Utt, a producer of the Academy Award-winning film “Silence of the Lambs” who also had a small part in the movie and in others he produced, died of cancer Wednesday in New York City.

Utt, who most recently was executive producer of the recently released “Philadelphia,” was 72, a family spokeswoman said.

Utt broke into the entertainment industry as an actor on Broadway in “Carousel.” He had featured roles in such TV productions as “Studio One” and was an associate producer for such popular series as “The Defenders” and “NYPD.” He stayed on Broadway as a stage manager for such shows as “Peter Pan” and “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” As a movie executive he worked on “All That Jazz,” “The Angel Levine” and “The French Connection,” among others.

He recently was awarded a Crystal Apple for career achievement by the New York Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting.

Survivors include his wife, Angie, a son, a daughter and four grandchildren. Services will be held Monday in New York.
