Pacific Telesis, Hewlett-Packard in Pact: The two firms said they have agreed to develop technology that will let California customers call up movies and other programs “on demand” by late this year or early next. Computer maker Hewlett-Packard will supply large “video servers,” powerful computers that will distribute digital video to consumers’ homes. Pacific Bell will provide the dial tone network over which the service will be offered. If the FCC approves, the service will be available initially in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley.
