IRVINE : Residential Hotel Vote Due Tonight
After months of debate, the City Council tonight is scheduled to decide the fate of a proposal to build a residential hotel next to an industrial area off Jamboree Road.
The Planning Commission last year rejected the plan, saying the hotel’s proposed location near a rock-crushing plant and garbage facility was not acceptable.
But others in the city continue to support the project, arguing that the hotel would provide an attractive living arrangement for people who work in Irvine but can’t afford to live there.
The Irvine Co., Shawnatana Development Corp. and HomeAid Orange County seek to jointly develop the three-story, $12-million Irvine Inn. The hotel would have 265 rooms--each complete with a bathroom and small kitchenette. A furnished room would cost about $370 a month, hundreds less than a one-bedroom apartment in most parts of the city.
City officials have expressed support for the Irvine Inn concept, but some said the proposed location is too isolated from shopping and lacks adequate public transportation.
