DAVOS : The Elite Meet
Business and political leaders from around the world gather in the eastern Swiss mountain resort for five days beginning Thursday to discuss world issues and economic trends.
Among leaders who accepted invitations to this year’s Davos World Economic Forum: Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan and P. V. Narasimha Rao of India, Mexican President Carlos Salinas Gortari, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasser Arafat.
In all, the meeting will attract 800 representatives from industry, 200 political leaders and 200 leaders from the fields of science and the arts. The forum’s theme: “Redefining the basic assumptions of the world economy.”
In addition to discussion, the annual event has become known as the venue for clinching big business deals.
