TELECOMMUNICATIONS : New Computer Product Allows Simultaneous Document Editing

Intel Corp., sensing a lucrative market for products that allow computer users at different locations to work on documents together, said Tuesday that it has teamed with several companies to offer the technology.

Intel’s new personal computer conferencing product, called ProShare, will enable two people to edit documents simultaneously across any distance while talking on the phone.

With the addition of a tiny camera, they will be able to exchange live pictures of themselves. This will all be possible because of new digital telephone connections that can carry voices and images from one PC to another.

Pacific Bell, BellSouth and Bell Atlantic have all agreed to work with Intel in providing the technology needed to link the devices. Intel’s partners in the venture are AT&T;, Compaq Computer Corp. and Compression Labs Inc.

“We are entering an era when people will use their PCs to make and receive calls and to solve business problems together,” said Andrew S. Grove, president and chief executive of Intel, a computer chip maker based in Santa Clara, Calif. ProShare is expected to carry a suggested price of $99, whereas the video system ranges from $1,199 to $2,499.
