Oliver Smith; Designed Sets for Musicals, Movies

Oliver Smith, 75, set designer for major Broadway hits such as “West Side Story” and “Camelot.” A native of Waupun, Wis., who studied art at Pennsylvania State College, he designed more than 250 productions for musicals, ballets, operas and films. He also served as co-director of the American Ballet Theater from 1945 to 1980 and 1990 to 1992. Smith taught scenic design at New York University for 22 years. Among his stellar accomplishments on Broadway, which won numerous Tonys and Critics’ Circle awards, were the sets for “Brigadoon,” “My Fair Lady,” “Hello, Dolly!” “Paint Your Wagon,” “Auntie Mame,” “Flower Drum Song,” and “Plaza Suite.” His ballet sets were created for such choreographers as Agnes de Mille and Jerome Robbins, and opera sets for the New York Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera. For Hollywood, Smith designed sets for “The Band Wagon” and screen versions of “Oklahoma!,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Porgy and Bess,” “The Sound of Music,” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” On Sunday in New York of emphysema.
