‘93 Merger, Acquisition Value Up Steeply: The total value of mergers and acquisitions announced in 1993 involving U.S. companies jumped 86% from the prior year, while the number of deals grew only 4%, according to Merrill Lynch Business Advisory Services, a division of Merrill Lynch. The firm said the total value of proposed mergers and acquisitions disclosing a purchase price in 1993 was $176.4 billion, compared to $94.9 billion in 1992. There were 2,664 announced transactions in 1993, compared to 2,550 a year earlier. The largest transaction announced in 1993 was the proposed merger of Bell Atlantic Corp. and Tele-Communications Inc., valued at $16 billion.
