LA HABRA : Teachers Try for Reading Program

Share

Six teachers in the La Habra City School District are vying for a chance to learn about the “Reading Recovery” program to reduce the number of students with reading and writing problems.

The program, which began more than 10 years ago in New Zealand schools and subsequently was used in Columbus, Ohio, schools, focuses on detecting reading and writing difficulties of students when they are in the first grade.

School board members this week unanimously approved allowing the district’s six teachers to apply for the program, which will be conducted by the Orange County Department of Education during the 1994-95 school year.

The district would pay $26,500 in training costs if they are selected. Once training is complete, the teachers--two from El Cerrito, two from Ladera Palma and two from Las Lomas elementary schools--would help their students learn to read and write in a one-on-one basis until they are up to the average level of their classes.

Teacher selections will be announced in May.
