David replaces Robert F. Daniell, who will remain chairman of UTC’s board of directors after David takes over as chief executive officer April 18, the company said Monday.

Daniell said he wants to focus on strategic issues for the aerospace and defense contractor, including international collaborations and long-term relationships with key government and commercial customers.

David, who joined the subsidiary Otis Elevator Co. in 1975, was named UTC president and chief operating officer in February 1992. In 1986, he was named chief executive officer of Otis.

Daniell was elected chief executive officer in 1986 and company chairman in 1987.

United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., provides a range of high-technology products and support systems to the aerospace, building systems and automotive industries. UTC owns both Otis and Sikorsky.
