LOS ANGELES : El Camino Real, Kennedy Will Reopen on Feb. 15

School officials said they will reopen El Camino Real and Kennedy high schools Feb. 15--two weeks earlier than planned--because the state has assured the Los Angeles Unified School District that portable classrooms will be in place.

Associate Supt. Dan Isaacs said he expects the two campuses to resume classes in portable bungalows until earthquake-damaged classroom buildings are repaired. Parents who do not wish to wait may enroll their children in other high schools within the district for the semester, Isaacs said.

But he said the district expects about 95% of the students to return to El Camino Real and Kennedy when those campuses reopen.

Students and staff at Van Gogh Street Elementary in Granada Hills, which has been closed because of large cracks and fissures throughout the campus, will be relocated to Frost Middle School, officials said. Classes also will start Feb. 15.
