Just minutes after Washington defeated No. 12 Arizona, 74-69, for its first Pacific 10 Conference victory of the season Saturday at Seattle, first-year Coach Bob Bender raced for a telephone.

“Did you hear our score yet, Coach?” an ecstatic Bender asked excitedly.

The coach on the other end of the line was Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, a former Bender mentor. Bender played and was an assistant coach at Duke.

“This game means more than just one win in this particular year,” Bender said. “For our kids to finally be rewarded for all of their hard work makes it really special.”

Maurice Woods and Jason Tyrus each scored 20 points as Washington (3-15, 1-9) beat the Wildcats for the third time in four games in Seattle and broke a nine-game overall losing streak.

Damon Stoudamire had 21 points to lead Arizona (17-4, 6-3), which had a four-game winning streak broken, but he was only one of 10 from three-point range. Backcourt mate Khalid Reeves had 17, but made only one of eight three-point attempts.

Stoudamire compared the defeat to Arizona’s 64-61 loss to Santa Clara in a first-round NCAA tournament game in Salt Lake City last season.

“I never thought in my wildest dreams that we would lose to this team,” Stoudamire said. “It was just like the Santa Clara game. I haven’t seen Washington play much, but I know they had to be playing better than they’ve ever played in their lives today.”

Washington State 73, Arizona State 70--Mark Hendrickson’s three-point shot with no time left lifted the Cougars to a dramatic victory at Pullman, Wash.

Washington State led, 70-67, with 4.5 seconds to go when the Sun Devils’ Stevin Smith made a three-point shot to tie the score. On the final possession, Eddie Hill dribbled upcourt and then hit Hendrickson with a pass with a second remaining. Hendrickson shot from the right side, just behind the three-point line.

No. 19 California 81, Oregon 61--Before a crowd of 8,975--Oregon’s largest since the 1990-91 season--Jason Kidd had 19 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds and Lamond Murray had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bears (14-4, 7-2) over the Beavers (6-12, 2-7) at Eugene, Ore.

Stanford 71, Oregon State 67--Brent Williams scored 27 points, including two clinching free throws with 4.8 seconds left, as the Cardinal defeated the Beavers at Corvallis, Ore.

Andy Poppink scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Stanford (13-15, 6-3). Brent Barry scored 19 for Oregon State (5-13, 1-8), which has lost five in a row.
