Delayed Tall Ship Is Expected to Dock at Dana Point Today

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The fierce winds that buffeted the Southland have delayed the appearance of a replica of an 18th-Century trading vessel in the Dana Point Harbor.

On both Monday and Tuesday, the Lady Washington was on the open sea heading toward Orange County from San Diego, only to be turned back by strong winds.

Today, the 112-foot tall ship is expected to set out again for Dana Point, and Orange County Marine Institute officials hope the Lady Washington will dock at their mooring sometime after noon.

“With the heavy winds and high seas, they decided it was the better part of valor to return back to San Diego,” said Dan Stetson, assistant executive director of the marine institute. “If the weather holds, we hope to see her in here sometime during the afternoon.”

The Lady Washington is a full-size replica of the first colonial American ship to reach the West Coast in 1788. It will be met off the coast of Dana Point by the Californian, a replica of a 19th-Century trading vessel, before docking at the marine institute.

Normally docked at Grays Harbor Historical Seaport in Aberdeen, Wash., the Lady Washington can be viewed the next two weekends.
