LYNWOOD : Runoff Election Tuesday for School Board Seat
Voters will attempt to break a tie Tuesday between two incumbents for a seat on the Lynwood Unified School District board.
A special election is being held to decide whether incumbent Rachel Chavez or Joe T. Battle will serve another term. Each received 1,281 votes in the Nov. 2 school board race, just behind newcomer Laura M. Byrd. The three were competing for two seats. Byrd was sworn into office in December. Trustees decided on a special runoff to break the tie between Chavez and Battle, but will allow both incumbents to remain until then. The decision temporarily left the district with six board members.
Chavez, 55, a homemaker, former adult education teacher and the board’s only Latina, has served one term. Battle, 52, an Internal Revenue Service manager, is seeking his fourth term.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
