Bet Tzedek Anniversary Party Nets $1.1 Million for Legal Aid

Bet Tzedek Legal Services held its “House of Justice” 20th anniversary celebration Feb. 5 at the Century Plaza Hotel. Honorees were Bet Tzedek President Jerome L. Coben, president and managing partner of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and Stanley W. Levy, Bet Tzedek co-founder and general counsel for Guess? Inc. Net proceeds of $1.1 million will help provide free legal representation for the more than 6,000 poor and elderly clients served each year.

Educational Resources and Services Center Inc. received a $20,000 grant Feb. 8 from the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce Champions Foundation. The money will be used to buy equipment for the ERAS vocational training program.

Friends of Sheba Medical Center netted $250,000 at its Jan. 26 gala honoring Anjelica Huston at the Beverly Hilton.

Concern II, a young professional group founded to raise funds for research on children’s cancer, held its annual benefit at the Olympic Collection in West Los Angeles. The party, attended by more than 1,100 guests, raised $7,000.

Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center received a $30,000 donation from the Culver City Guidance Clinic Guild. The center provides individual, group and family therapy, as well as other programs.

Access Theatre announced receipt of a $45,000 grant from the James Irvine Foundation. The money was used to appoint Daniel Girard director of programs and community access. The position was created to strengthen community outreach.

St. Anne’s Maternity Home, Hillsides Home for Children in Pasadena and the National Charity League, Los Angeles Founder Chapter, will share a $9,500 donation from the Junior Charity League, Los Angeles.

World Vision U.S. has received new power tools valued at nearly $10,000. Hitachi Power Tools USA Ltd. donated the tools to help the effort to rebuild churches and homes in the San Fernando Valley damaged by the Jan. 17 earthquake.

Los Angeles Children’s Museum received a $200,000 donation from Sparkletts Drinking Water through its philanthropic arm, the McKesson Foundation. The funds were used to create a 600-square-foot water display called “Sparkletts H20.” The display encourages children to explore water with their five senses. The opening will be Friday at an event to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
