Board OKs Gas Station, Mini-Mart Along Fault

PALMDALE — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Thursday approved a Rosamond developer’s application to build a gas station and mini-mart along the San Andreas Fault but denied him a permit to sell liquor.
Palmdale officials had vehemently opposed the project, just outside the city on Avenue S near the Antelope Valley Freeway, saying that underground gas tanks along the fault could create a disaster in an earthquake.
Palmdale leaders also were concerned that the underground tanks would be upstream from Lake Palmdale, the main water source for east Palmdale.
The board required that the tanks be located 100 feet from the fault.
In testimony, developer Nick Vartanian said he was willing to do whatever the board required to get approval. After the ruling, however, Vartanian would not comment on whether he would build his mini-mart if he could not sell liquor.
