COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Smothers Hapless Caltech, 33-5

After losing an extra-inning heartbreaker a day earlier, Cal Lutheran took out its wrath on Caltech, exploding to a 33-5 victory Friday night in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball opener.

The Kingsmen (1-1), who scored eight runs in losing their first game of the season to Azusa Pacific, scored 12 times in the first against Caltech and 11 in the second. The game was called after six innings by a mercy rule.

Designated hitter Chris Fick and catcher Scott Sebbo each had five runs batted in. Fick was four for four with three doubles.

Adding to the attack was John Becker, who homered and singled, and Eduardo Castillo, who went two for four with four runs scored. Becker and Castillo each drove in three runs.

Sophomore Dave Jaglowski pitched a complete game for Cal Lutheran, striking out 13.

The Beavers committed 12 errors. They were paced by catcher Alan Blaine, who was three for four with a double and two RBIs.

In other baseball games:

Glendale 8, Merced 3--Lance Evans doubled, tripled and drove in two runs, and Randy Vickers added two hits and two RBIs to lead Glendale (1-1) over Merced (2-3) in a losers’ bracket game in the Kings River tournament. Evans had three hits and scored once.

Left-hander Josh Parker (1-0) scattered nine hits over eight innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Ventura 6, Cal Lutheran JV 3--Jamal Nichols went three for four including a triple for Ventura (2-1).

Teammates Victor Moreno and Jeff Hook each added two hits in the nonconference game.

Canyons 7, L.A. City 5--Chris Pfatenhauer, Ari Jacobs, David Castillo, J.T. Billingslea and R.J. Fenolio each had two hits for the Cougars in a nonconference opener at Valencia. The Cougars broke open the game with a four-run sixth inning keyed by Castillo’s leadoff solo home run.

Jannani Matson pitched six innings for the victory, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out six.

Porterville 3, Valley 2--Ozzie Areu went three for five with a double and a solo home run in the ninth inning in the Monarchs’ first-round loss at the Sequoias tournament.

John Farmer (1-0) scattered six hits in his complete-game victory for Porterville (2-2), striking out 13 without issuing any walks.

Dave Stevenson produced the other Valley run with a third-inning homer.

Cuesta 5, Mission 0--Gary Matthews clubbed a pair of doubles, but Mission could not get on the scoreboard in a fourth-round game of the Chaffey tournament.

Rob Walley (0-1) pitched five innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned). Mission, which finished 2-2 in the tournament, defeated Rio Hondo, 2-1, earlier in the day behind Robert Ballester’s four-hitter.

Ballester (1-0) struck out five and Dave Valdez (two for three with a double) singled home Walley with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Moorpark 16, Santa Monica 2--Jeff Naster earned the victory for Moorpark in the Cypress tournament game. Moorpark defeated Golden West, 13-1, behind the pitching of Brad Taylor earlier in the day.

TRACK & FIELD

Non-scoring meet--Sean McKeown of Moorpark placed second in the shotput (47 feet 10 inches) and discus (151-6), and third in the hammer throw (142-0) to lead the Raiders at Cerritos College.

Mike Esparza placed second in the 1,500 meters (4 minutes 7.04 seconds) for Moorpark and teammate Isaiah Mustafa finished second in the long jump at 21-3.

Wendy Wendelstein, who sat out her senior season at Thousand Oaks High due to injuries, finished second in the women’s 200 (26.6) and third in the 100 (12.9).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern California College 77, Cal Lutheran 53--Melissa Wood had 18 points for visiting Cal Lutheran, but Southern California had four players who scored in double figures in the nonconference game.

Wood, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, made seven of 16 shots from the field and was four of nine from three-point range.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State tournament--Oliver Heitman had 35 kills and 10 digs to carry Cal State Northridge to a 17-16, 11-15, 15-9, 15-13 victory over San Diego State in the Matadors’ second pool play match of the day.

Northridge (2-1), which defeated Loyola Marymount, 14-16, 15-10, 11-15, 15-13, 15-12, earlier in the day, also received 32 kills from Craig Hewitt, 24 from Jason Hughes and 20 from Collin Smith.
