Actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. was unanimously confirmed Friday by the Los Angeles City Council to represent the city on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy board.

Begley, who was nominated by Mayor Richard Riordan, was appointed to the eight-member panel that sets policy for the conservancy, a state agency that buys parkland in the Santa Monica Mountains and neighboring ranges.

Begley, a Studio City resident who is best known for his role in the television series “St. Elsewhere,” was previously named to the city’s Environmental Affairs Commission, an advisory panel.

Speaking briefly to the council after being confirmed, Begley said he will “fulfill all the needs the city has” of him on the conservancy board.

Begley replaces Anton Calleia, a chief aide to former Mayor Tom Bradley and the city’s representative on the conservancy board since 1982.
