WOMEN’S BASKETBALL : Senior Trio Leads Way for UCLA

With seniors Detra Lockhart, Amy Jalewalia and Natalie Williams leading the way, the UCLA women’s basketball team broke open a tight game and defeated Arizona, 85-69, on Friday night.

It was the Bruins’ third consecutive Pacific 10 Conference victory, their fifth in six games and boosted their conference record to 8-4, 13-8 overall.

Before 427 in the Wooden Center, Lockhart, a 5-foot-6 guard who made three three-point shots, single-handedly lifted the Bruins out of harm’s way with seven minutes to go, after Arizona (12-9, 5-7) had cut an eight-point UCLA halftime lead to 63-61.

Lockhart made a 12-foot jump shot, an 18-footer, passed to Jalewalia for a basket and made two free throws to help the Bruins build the lead to 71-61 with 4:39 to play.

Lockhart scored a career-high 23 points and had eight assists and five steals in 28 minutes. Williams had 26 points and nine rebounds and Jalewalia had 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
