Defendant in Amy Biehl Case Claims Police Abuse
A young man accused of murdering American student Amy Biehl has testified that he talked about his possible involvement only after police slapped his face.
The lawyer for the three men accused of stabbing and beating to death the 26-year-old white Fulbright scholar from Newport Beach argues that they were forced to make written statements after being assaulted by police. But police witnesses have denied the suspects were assaulted.
Judge Gerald Friedman is hearing evidence to determine whether the statements can be admitted as evidence. The contents have not been revealed.
Mzikhona Nofemela was arrested in Guguletu on Aug. 26, the day after Biehl was killed while driving friends to their homes in the black township.
Nofemela, Mongezi Manqina and Vusumzi Ntamo have pleaded innocent to charges of murder, robbery and public violence.
