Clinton Welfare Cuts

Share

* By advocating the taxing of food stamps and the cutting of welfare and SSI benefits, President Clinton has forsaken the roots and basic principles of the Democratic Party. For many decades the Democrats have been the party of compassion and the defender of the little guy and the downtrodden.

The best way to help the poor is the creation of jobs, even if they are the WPA-CCC-type jobs that President Roosevelt implemented. As many other counties do, we could put in a value-added tax where the burden is spread to everyone. If he wants to cut welfare, why doesn’t he cut welfare for the affluent, such as the subsidy to the wool and mohair producers, which has been in place since the Korean War.

Must we once again dump on the poor, handicapped and elderly?
