CARSON : University Gets High-Tech Challenger Learning Center
Cal State Dominguez Hills in November will become the latest site of a high-tech learning center inspired by the seven astronauts who died in the Challenger space shuttle explosion.
The Challenger Learning Center will be a permanent education facility on the Carson campus, where fifth- through eight-graders will operate a futuristic space station and learn about mathematics and science. The center is being funded by a $350,000 grant from the Carson-based Allied Signal aerospace firm, and will be the 18th such center in the nation, spokesman Rick Gloady said.
Up to 20,000 students, most of them from low-income minority communities, are expected to use the center eachyear. Youngsters will have the opportunity to fly on a simulated space mission and will have to solve math and science problems along the way.
