BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Lovullo Recalls Quake Nightmare

Share

Second baseman Torey Lovullo unpacked in the Angel clubhouse at Tempe, Ariz., on Wednesday, but instead of fretting about a starting job, he said he was grateful to be alive.

His Northridge home was hit the hardest of all the Angels’ residences in the Jan. 17 earthquake, and certainly, no one was more scared.

Lovullo, who moved out of his home and spent all but the last three days living in Dana Point, is not sure he will move back. He remembers the fear of furniture crashing around the bassinet of his 2-month-old son. If they had not moved it a week earlier, he hates to envision what might have happened.

“I was terrified,” said Lovullo, who actually broke one of his wife’s ribs while reaching for his son. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget something like this.”

Ted Updike, agent for right fielder Tim Salmon, confirmed Wednesday that they are progressing toward a three-year deal with the Angels. “I feel pretty good about the thing right now,” Updike said. Salmon is expected to get about $4 million for the three years. . . . Angel General Manager Bill Bavasi talked with agent Arn Tellem in an attempt to sign starter Mark Langston to at least a three-year contract extension. . . . Reliever Scott Lewis signed a one-year contract, leaving the Angels with five unsigned players. Bavasi has given them--Salmon, Chad Curtis, Gary DiSarcina, Damion Easley and Mike Butcher--a March 3 deadline to reach a settlement.

The Angels’ first full-squad workout will be held today with hitters facing major league pitchers for the first time this spring.
