To demonstrate how far the San Jose Sharks have come in their fourth NHL season, consider their attitude in traveling to Ottawa.

“We thought we could come in and win this game,” said Shark center Jamie Baker, a former Senator. “I mean, look at Ottawa’s record!”

Why not? The Senators were 0-9-3 in their last 12 games, had won only nine of 61 and hadn’t scored in their last 137 minutes.

But Sylvain Turgeon scored two power-play goals and rookie Alexei Yashin had three assists for Ottawa in a 5-4 victory over the Sharks.

Darren Rumble ended Ottawa’s scoreless string when he snapped Yashin’s pass behind Sharks goalie Arturs Irbe 2:17 into the game.

Chicago 6, Winnipeg 3--Jeremy Roenick scored four times and reached the 30-goal plateau for the fourth consecutive season as the Blackhawks survived the loss of Steve Smith with a possible broken leg at Chicago.

Roenick Helped extend Winnipeg’s winless streak to 17 games (0-15-2).

Smith tumbled to the ice at 12:45 of the first period after being struck by a left uppercut from Tie Domi. Smith’s leg buckled under him, and Domi continued to pummel him with left jabs as he fell.

Tampa Bay 4, Calgary 0--Lightning goaltender Daren Puppa stopped 18 shots at Calgary for his fourth shutout and the Flames scored in each of the first two periods in cruising to their seventh road victory in the last 11 games.

Detroit 3, Hartford 0--Sergei Fedorov assisted on all three Red Wing goals at Richfield, Ohio, and Chris Osgood got the first shutout of his career.

New York Rangers 3, New Jersey 1--Mark Messier became the 11th NHL player to collect 1,300 career points by setting up Adam Graves’ go-ahead goal in the second period at East Rutherford, N.J.
