CALABASAS : Neighborliness Topic at Today’s Workshop

In the aftermath of the Northridge quake, neighbors reached out to help each other--some for the very first time.

In Calabasas, community volunteers want to keep that spirit alive, even when there is no disaster.

At a meeting sponsored by the Health and Wellness Committee of Calabasas today, a panel will discuss disaster preparedness with an emphasis on how to be better neighbors, even when there is no emergency.

“The main part is creating more cohesive neighborhoods,” said Addie Winter, co-chair of the committee and organizer of the event. “You can’t just live in your own little shell.”

Winter, who started a community watch in her neighborhood two years ago to combat crime, compiled a list of all the names, phone numbers and car license plates of her neighbors. She hopes to encourage other residents to do the same.

“I can’t believe how many people said they weren’t prepared,” said Winter. “There are people who live alone. One woman who is disabled was locked in her bedroom with no phone for a couple of hours. With a Neighborhood Watch, you can check on people in an emergency.”

Panelists at the workshop will also discuss issues such as earthquake assistance, property damage and physical preparedness.

The workshop is the second in a series entitled “Creating a Community.” At the first seminar, a panel of therapists addressed emotional concerns.

Today’s seminar will be held at 10 a.m. at Calabasas City Hall, 26135 Mureau Road.
