Tupac Shakur not only stars in the movie “Above the Rim”--about the famed annual inter-borough basketball tournament at Rucker’s Playground in Harlem--but also (under his rapper name 2Pac) is on the soundtrack album. The album--also featuring new songs from Onyx, Bell Biv DeVoe, H-Town, 2nd II None and Aaron Hall, with production by Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, D.J. Quik and Jam Master Jay--is due on March 22, right in the middle of March Madness, the NCAA basketball tournament. . . .

Unreleased tracks recorded with the Clash and Bob Dylan are among the highlights of Rhino Records’ four-CD box set of poet Allen Ginsberg. The collection also features some old poetry readings by Ginsberg set to new music assembled by producer Hal Willner. . . .

The first release by the reunited General Public will be a version of the Staple Singers’ old “I’ll Take You There.” The track is part of the soundtrack album from the upcoming low-budget film “Threesome.” The soundtrack, produced by Ralph Sall (who did the “Addams Family Values” music) features KROQ-type bands all with the common theme of sex. Among the other selections are an obscure Duran Duran B-side version of obscure English rocker Steve Harley’s “Make Me Smile,” a new The The recording of its own “This Is the Day” (retitled “That Was the Day”) and Bryan Ferry’s “Is Your Love Strong Enough,” making its first album appearance. . . .

Also for KROQ fans, ‘80s new wave will be the focus of Rhino’s latest comprehensive multi-CD anthology, “Just Can’t Get Enough,” a 15-volume set coming in June. . . .

Just because Basia hasn’t released a new album in four years doesn’t mean she’s retired. She’s at work on one, due May 3.
