SANTA ANA : Saddleback Students Get EPA Recognition
Students at Saddleback High School have received a commendation from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their continuing efforts to promote community awareness of hazardous materials.
Last week, members of the school’s Students for Social Responsibility club received a plaque that recognized their activities in 1993 to educate the community about the dangers of common household items.
Only 11 student groups in California, Arizona and Hawaii were chosen for recognition, said Santa Ana Unified School District spokeswoman Rosemary Gladden.
During the last year, the youngsters set up informational displays during Earth Week and handed out pamphlets offering environmentally safe alternatives, such as baking soda and lime juice, to common household detergents and cleansers.
Gladden also said the students performed skits about the proper disposal of motor oil and encouraged classmates and parents to purchase only items whose packaging uses a minimum of plastic and paper wrapping.
