Denver Airport’s Opening Delayed: Mayor Wellington Webb, after meeting with officials from United and Continental airlines, postponed the opening of Denver International Airport to May 15 from March 9. The hang-up is the automated system that will move passengers’ baggage from the terminal check-in area to the planes in the three concourses. Continental Airlines Inc. of Houston and Chicago-based UAL Corp.’s United, the major hub operators at Denver, agreed to cover the full cost of the delay, estimated at $30 million. It was the third delay of the opening of the $3.2-million facility being built to replace the city’s Stapleton Airport.

Steelmaker Hit by Strike: About 4,000 members of the United Steelworkers of America walked off their jobs at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. plants in three states. It was the company’s second labor dispute in nine years. Union negotiators said pensions, medical benefits, salaries and retiree insurance were some of the sticking points. Wheeling-Pittsburgh, based in Wheeling, W. Va., is the nation’s eighth-largest company producing steel from scratch. Last year, the company performed strongly but still posted a loss of $6.2 million as it paid off debt earlier than anticipated. The current, three-year labor contract was part of the company’s re-emergence from bankruptcy in 1991.
