Free deadbolt locks and other home safety devices are available through a Home Secure Program run by the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles.

The non-sectarian program is available to city residents with incomes of less than $27,050 for a single person or $30,900 for a couple.

A total of 1,790 people have received assistance over the last 14 months of the program, said director Leslie Friedman.

Peepholes, deadbolts, window and door locks and grab bars for the bathroom are available.

The program also provides information on crime and accident prevention and personal safety to clients, and can refer them to other community services that are available to them, Friedman said.

The staff includes people who speak Spanish and Russian. Information is available in English, Spanish, Korean and Russian.

The program was started in 1977 and receives funding from the community development departments of Los Angeles and West Hollywood.

Information: (213) 937-5855. Spanish-speaking staff members are available Monday through Wednesday only.
