Dehere Scheduled to Have Surgery on His Broken Leg
Surgery is planned Tuesday for 2-year-old champion Dehere, who suffered a broken right hind leg in a workout Friday and won’t run in any of the Triple Crown races.
Dehere is “receiving medication and is resting as well as can be expected,” trainer Reynaldo Nobles said Saturday.
Dehere was injured at Palm Beach Downs, a training center where the colt is wintering. Surgery is scheduled at a clinic in nearby Pompano Beach.
“We don’t want him to have to travel too far and risk further damage,” Nobles said.
Dehere was the early favorite for the Florida Derby on March 12. He beat favored and previously unbeaten Holy Bull and highly regarded Go For Gin in the $200,000 Fountain of Youth on Feb. 19.
