L.A. Critics Are Crazy for ‘Crazy,’ ‘Tavern’ : Stage: The plays share the top prize of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle. Of the theaters, Orange County’s South Coast Repertory wins the most awards.

South Coast Repertory and “Sunset Boulevard” will take home the most awards--although not the most prominent ones--from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards ceremony next month, it was announced Monday.

South Coast captured seven of the competitive awards--more than any other single producer. The five for “Sunset Boulevard,” including one for star Glenn Close, surpasses the number of awards for any other single production.

Yet neither “Sunset Boulevard” nor any South Coast show received even a nomination for the top competitive honor for outstanding production. That award will go to “Crazy for You” and “The Tavern” this year.

“Crazy for You,” which was seen at the Shubert Theatre last summer before the onslaught of “Sunset Boulevard,” won four awards, while the Matrix Theatre revival of “The Tavern” received three.

South Coast’s production of “Great Day in the Morning” also garnered three awards, while three shows--the West Coast Ensemble revival of “Equus,” the Pacific Resident Theatre Ensemble revival of “Ondine” and South Coast’s production of “Shadowlands”--won two apiece.

Center Theatre Group, last year’s big Critics Circle winner, this year won only three awards--spread over three productions.

Nine of the 30 awards were won by productions in sub-100-seat venues--the same number that went to shows at the single most awarded venue, the Shubert Theatre, home of both “Crazy For You” and “Sunset Boulevard.”

The awards will be presented at an April 10 ceremony at Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City.
