More students are expected to graduate this year than last from Cal State Fullerton, allowing spaces for slightly higher enrollment in the fall, according to campus census figures released Tuesday.

Cal State Fullerton, in adjusting to state budget cuts, accepted fewer students last fall, which resulted in availability of more classes and students taking on heavier course loads. This contributed to more students graduating this semester, opening up spaces for enrollment in the fall, said James Blackburn, director of admission and records.

“What this means is that we can keep the overall enrollment the same size and yet still provide more opportunities for new students next fall,” Blackburn said.

To absorb cuts in state aid, university officials had to cut enrollment last year. This semester, 21,787 people registered, compared to 22,875 last spring, Blackburn said.

“You have fewer students contending for some of the class spaces, so the chances of individual students securing more units increased,” he said.

The average load taken by students this spring is 10.4 units, up from last spring’s 10.26 and the previous spring’s 10.29, Blackburn said.
