TRANSPORTATION : Project to Ease Traffic in Pomona
A traffic synchronization project aims to put more green lights in front of drivers along two major east-west thoroughfares in Pomona.
The two-year project encompasses nine miles and 30 traffic signal lights at intersections along Holt Avenue between Union Avenue and Mills Avenue, and along Mission Boulevard between Phillips Drive and East End Avenue. Both streets are major arteries from the Orange (57), Pomona (60) and San Bernardino (10) freeways.
Funded by a combination of $50,000 from the city and $150,000 from the California Energy Commission, the project calls for each intersection’s traffic signal to be automatically reset--via microwave radio frequency signals--in unison at least once daily, county officials said.
The new, computer-aided equipment uses sensors to adjust the signals as the volume and predominant flow of traffic changes during the day. For instance, green lights at left-turn lanes will last longer when cars get backed up during the morning or evening commute.
The Pomona traffic signal project is part of a countywide program initiated in 1988.
