The field of candidates for president at Cal State Long Beach has been narrowed to two: Karl Anatol, interim president at the university since last March, and Robert Maxson, president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

They will be interviewed March 23 by the California State University Board of Trustees, which is expected to name a new president March 24.

Anatol has been at Cal State Long Beach since 1969, serving in many positions including university provost and vice president for academic affairs, dean of the School of Humanities, and acting dean of the School of Business Administration.

Maxson has been president of UNLV since 1984, guiding the university in unprecedented growth and overseeing an extensive expansion of the university’s physical facilities. He revealed last month that he also was a candidate for president at the University of Oklahoma.

Two other semifinalists, Robert Detweiler and Manuel Ibanaz, withdrew from consideration before the two finalists were selected.
