Thousand Oaks : Deputy Represents DARE in Washington
A Thousand Oaks sheriff’s deputy who oversees an anti-drug, anti-gang program in the city’s middle schools attended a briefing on crime programs with the vice president in Washington, D. C., on Wednesday.
Sgt. Bruce Hansen was one of 150 law-enforcement officials and local government representatives who took part in the four-hour meeting with Vice President Al Gore, Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown, Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Undersecretary of the Treasury Ronald Nobel.
Hansen went to Washington to represent Thousand Oaks’ Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.
The program, introduced to the city in 1985, is taught by uniformed officers in sixth- and eighth-grade classrooms. Along with the anti-drug message, the program stresses self-esteem, dealing with peer pressure and conflict resolution.
