Burton, a freshman from Long Beach, is expected to qualify for the nationals. She must place sixth or better in either the three-meter springboard or platform competition. Burton won the one- and three-meter springboard events in the Pacific Coast Swimming Conference championships last month.

Cassady, a sophomore from Santa Cruz, finished second in the three-meter and third in the one-meter in the PCSC meet.

Basketball

John Block, who played briefly at Glendale College before embarking on a successful collegiate and professional career, will be inducted into the California Community College Basketball Coaches Assn. Hall of Fame today as part of the men’s state championships festivities.

Other inductees are Sidney Wicks (Santa Monica City and UCLA), Swen Nater (Cypress and UCLA), Mack Calvin (Long Beach City and USC) and John Vallely (Orange Coast and UCLA). All played in the NBA.

Block played at Glendale in the 1962-63 season and then transferred to USC, where he became an All-American. He played nine seasons in the NBA with four teams, including the Lakers.

The 6-foot-9 center-forward ranks among Glendale’s single-season leaders in scoring with 630 points (14th), scoring average (fourth at 26.3) and rebounding average (fifth at 14.7). He also made 18 free throws in a game, a school record that still stands.

Jason Hartman, a senior forward for Thousand Oaks High, has been named most valuable player of the Marmonte League. Hartman, who will attend Washington in the fall, led the Lancers in scoring (18.9 points a game) and rebounding (11.1).
