About 80 science students from Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools are getting up close and personal with the Pacific Ocean.

They are participating in Quiksilver Teach & Test, an eight-week pilot program to conduct water testing at 12 locations from Reef Point to the Santa Ana River jetty. The project is run by the Newport Beach chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club. Quiksilver, a surfwear manufacturer in Costa Mesa, is sponsor.

Students are charting non-point pollution, which accounts for more than 80% of ocean water pollution. The project is designed to raise awareness about the fact that anything that goes into a storm drain goes directly to the ocean, Surfrider chairman Ryan Kelly said. Teachers supervising the project were trained in water-testing procedures by Surfrider representatives. Results will be announced in mid-April.
