SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Caspers Park Seeks Tree Planting Help

Share

They have the trees, now they need hands to plant them.

More than 2,000 live oak saplings will be planted near Ronald W. Caspers Regional Park on Saturday to help salve the damage caused by last year’s firestorm that burned several thousand acres of open space.

The tree planting will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Groups and individuals interested in volunteering should contact the park at (714) 831-2174. Caspers park is off Ortega Highway, about 7 1/2 miles east of Interstate 5.

The oak trees and a watering trailer were donated by Chevron Petroleum Oil Technology. The oil company owns the nearby Coto de Caza development just north of Caspers park, and 50 Chevron employees will be volunteering.

Also helping will be the participants in the county’s Adopt-A-Park program. Park volunteers pitch in all year with trail maintenance, litter pickup and many other activities. Countywide, volunteers in the program save the parks system about $1 million annually.

People who plan to come Saturday are asked to bring a round-point shovel, sunscreen lotion, a hat and sunglasses. Drinking water, gloves and a light breakfast and lunch will be provided by park rangers.
